Greek Independence Day

The Annunciation of the Theotokos and Greek Independence Day

Exactly 200 years ago, the people of Greece declared their independence. Today, the City of Chicago and the United States celebrated two centuries of enduring friendship between our communities.

America’s Founding Fathers drew inspiration from ancient Greece’s example as they framed our Constitution and formed the world’s first modern democracy.  The celebration of the Greek Revolution of 1821 (Greek: Εορτασμός της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης του 1821, Eortasmós tis Ellinikís Epanástasis tou 1821), takes place in Greece on March 25 every year, coinciding with the Feast of the Annunciation.

Happy 200th Greek Independence Day! Ζήτω η Ελλάδα!
