Our mission is to provide free bicycles and ongoing maintenance to Chicago communities in financial need. 

About
We are Chicago Bike Project - An outreach ministry supported by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago’s Mustard Seed Fund and are proud recipients of the Hellenic Foundation Grant Award, headquartered at St. George in Lincoln Park. Our program provides free bicycles, locks, lights and helmets as well as free maintenance to Chicagoans in financial need. Our hope is to enable individuals greater access to food pantries, shelters, work opportunities, church services, legal obligations, and most importantly the opportunity to travel at no cost. 

Cars and other forms of public transportation are oftentimes inaccessible due to financial constraints and concerns for personal safety. This can drastically restrict one's ability to perform basic duties by limiting their access to out-of-reach locations. 

That being said, In Chicago, most necessities can be reached within a 5-mile radius. On foot, 5 miles equates to an average of 2 hours spent walking, however on a bicycle, that transforms into a speedy 30 minutes. What if that hour and a half each way afforded a person access to work, open hours at a food pantry, homeless shelters, Church Service, or legal obligations? 

A bicycle can instantly improve a person’s life by affording them time, access, and freedom to travel. We at Chicago Bike Project will provide that opportunity by offering bicycles, helmets, locks, lights and maintenance to communities in need.

Today is Palm Sunday (for the Orthodox Christians) and it is when Jesus humbly entered Jerusalem on a donkey. It’s a day that we look inward and recognize none of our earthly possessions or accomplishments are ours, and that we owe all our blessings to God and the community around us. Chicago Bike Project is nothing without the @stgeorgechicagogoc community - without hesitation they offered their church as our home base,and provided volunteers, bikes, and donations. 🚨 HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨 Chicago Bike Project is expanding! It’s no secret asking volunteers in sub 30 degree weather to wrench bikes outside is not inspiring. The good news is @stgeorgechicagogoc allotted a huge amount of warehouse space for our operations! It is heated, spacious, well lit, has benches to work at, and with a coffee machine, we will be well on our way. Stay tuned for details to volunteer on building out the space for our remote shop!
This is Alan. Last week he asked if we could get him a small propane tank to heat his tent for the night - he said he would pay for it but it was just too far to get (2 miles away). Today, Alan’s got two wheels and is excited to burn some rubbe
This is Alan. Last week he asked if we could get him a small propane tank to heat his tent for the night - he said he would pay for it but it was just too far to get (2 miles away). Today, Alan’s got two wheels and is excited to burn some rubber. Chicago Bike Project’s main goal is to provide access - sometimes that looks like a propane tank, other times a food pantry, getting to work, hospital, or church. These might be just a bit too far to walk to, on a bike though, that distance is much more manageable. Thanks to all of you who donate bikes and funds, thanks to all the mechanics making those bikes work, and thanks to everyone working on the backend pushing our mission further in expanding access to folks in need.
Half the mission is maintaining the bikes we put out there. After much snow/rain fall, cables and chains freeze and refuse to function. Luckily that is regular maintenance that we can manage! 🚨 If you are interested in volunteering, we will be going through our inventory and getting rusty trusty bikes right again, Sunday March 5th at noon high!
